Part-Time Bookkeeper

Mon Valley Initiative is a grassroots community development organization that has earned a reputation for providing affordable housing, quality real-estate development and excellent workforce and financial coaching services in Allegheny, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

We are seeking a detail-oriented person with a degree in accounting, business or a related field who can help us fulfill our missions in ways that are transparent and responsive to the communities we serve, as well as the organizations which provide our funding.

The part-time bookkeeper will work 24 hours per week in our Homestead office, on a set schedule to be determined by the employee and supervisor, with flexibility taken into account. The successful applicant will have excellent problem-solving abilities and will enjoy working collaboratively with other people. They will be able to organize and prioritize their tasks to meet deadlines, and demonstrate sound business judgement.

They will provide each of our program areas with a high level of support by ensuring that we comply with contractual obligations; reviewing invoices from vendors and creating checks; submitting invoices and recording payments; and helping to gather and maintain information for audits, monthly reports and other reviews.

They should have relevant experience in a small business or non-profit corporation, with an emphasis on accounting, finance and contract compliance. They should have a working knowledge of accounting software (preferably Sage or QuickBooks) and be fluent in Microsoft Excel and Word.

They will help with payroll, get quotes from vendors and suppliers, and assist in the management of our loan and rental portfolios. They should have an up-to-date, working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. Experience with internal auditing is preferred and full-time access to a vehicle as well as a valid driver’s license are necessary.

This position includes frequent standing and walking; excellent communications skills (including use of the telephone); and the ability to work as part of a fast-paced, high-performance team environment. A complete list of tasks and requirements is available here.

Intake Coordinator/Administrative Assistant

Mon Valley Initiative seeks a well-organized person with a positive, outgoing personality to serve as intake coordinator and administrative assistant in our Charleroi office.

This person will work closely with our employment and financial coach and other members of the MVI team to welcome visitors, both over the phone and in person. They will assist with communications and outreach via email, text messages and other methods, as necessary.

They will directly help the public by collecting information from new applicants to our workforce program and entering it into our system. They also will assist during group orientation events and learn about MVI’s other programs so they can discuss them with visitors and callers, and direct and connect people appropriately.

The successful applicant will be fluent in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook and PowerPoint, and be able to create mailing lists and perform mail merges. They will have strong communications skills, including the ability to write and respond appropriately to professional emails and business letters, and they also will be able to follow oral and written instructions.

They also should have experience working with customer-relationship management (CRM) software, such as Salesforce, and other computer databases. Past experience with small non-profit corporations or grassroots community organizations is a definite plus.

The ideal candidate will strongly support MVI’s mission and vision of working together to strengthen the communities of the Mon Valley through responsible investment in workforce development, real estate and quality housing. They will be optimistic and creative, and also eager to cooperate with their other MVI team members on projects. They will have a strong respect for diversity and be able to develop practical solutions to problems.

Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required. Reliable transportation is a must. This position requires frequent standing, sitting and walking, as well as the ability to use a telephone, fax machine, computer and other office equipment. A related academic degree or comparable work experience is preferred.
