For the third year in a row, Mon Valley Initiative wants to help local residents stop fumbling their finances, and instead develop winning strategies for saving money, buying a house and finding a better job.
“Tackle Your Financial Goals III” is a free workshop on financial literacy. The event, featuring a football theme and door prizes, is open to the public and will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 4 at MVI’s office, 305 E. 8th Ave. in Homestead.
“Tackle Your Financial Goals III” will include games, refreshments and the chance to ask questions of experts.
“Our goal, every day, is to help people in the Mon Valley become financially self-sufficient,” a spokesperson says. “But there are a lot of people who have questions about how to use credit or save money responsibly — and they don’t know who to ask, because they’re intimidated. For the past three years, we’ve held these ‘Tackle Your Financial Goals’ events to help our neighbors work on these serious problems — but we want them to have some fun at the same time, so that it’s not so intimidating.”
MVI is one of three Financial Opportunity Centers, or FOCs, in Allegheny County that are supported by Pittsburgh-based Neighborhood Allies. The FOCs offer employment assistance, financial education and coaching.
Additional support for MVI’s workforce and business development program comes from The Opportunity Fund, the Pennsylvania Self-Sufficiency Program, the Pittsburgh Foundation and United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania.
The MVI office is located near the intersection of Eighth and Ann streets and is accessible by many bus routes, including 53F, 56E, 59A, 59U, 61C and 61F. A parking lot is available behind the MVI office. Pre-registration is suggested, but not required. Call Deb Mattie at MVI at 412-464-4000 or email dmattie@monvalleyinitiative.com.
