Tackle your financial problems Oct. 10 — with help from MVI

Fall means football. It also means finishing up leftover tasks before the end of the year.

So why not tackle your financial problems this fall? The Mon Valley Initiative, in cooperation with Neighborhood Allies, presents “Tackle Your Financial Goals” from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10.

This free workshop at the MVI offices, 305 E. Eighth Ave., Homestead, will include refreshments, door prizes, and presentations by Barry Courson of Waddell & Reed and Bobby Smith of MVI. Pre-registration is suggested at 412-464-4000, ext. 4001, or by emailing gbachy@monvalleyinitiative.com.

The event is sponsored by Pittsburgh-based Neighborhood Allies as part of a celebration of “National Financial Goal Week.”

Courson is a financial advisor for Waddell & Reed in Monroeville. He’ll discuss “mental roadblocks” that prevent people from making smart decisions about how they spend and save money.

Then, Smith, a financial coach and workforce development specialist at MVI, will quiz participants on their own spending and saving habits with a fun trivia game.

MVI is one of three Financial Opportunity Centers, or FOCs, in Allegheny County that are supported by Neighborhood Allies to offer employment assistance, financial education and coaching. The others are in Pittsburgh at Northside Common Ministries, 1601 Brighton Road, and Oakland Planning & Development Corp., 294 Semple St.

The Oakland FOC will have a similar event to mark “National Financial Goal Week” from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. Oct. 11, while the Northside FOC will mark the occasion from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Oct. 12. All of the events are sponsored by Neighborhood Allies.
